The Hawk’s Magic Millions Day Selections

January 12, 2013

Today marks Magic Millions day, the first major raceday of the year in Australia.

It may be a restricted race meeting, but the quality is undeniably there. It’s definitely a tough meeting with big fields and plenty of value to be had.

This is my second time at a Magic Millions. The first was in 2009, when our mare Stella Command ran in the Class 6 Plate. She finished seventh to Zero Rock, who was the only favourite to salute on a tough day. Other winners on the day included Phelan Ready, Tempest Tost, Masai Pride and Centover – all at big odds!

So today is the sort of day where it is better to look for value rather than sticking to the favourites.

Here are my selections for today’s meeting, along with a summary of the two features – the 2yo Classic and the 3yo Guineas.

Race 5 – MAGIC MILLIONS 3YO GUINEAS (1400m)

The Magic Millions Guineas, for mine, is always one of the most underrated races on the calendar. The form out of the race always tends to stack up, and I’d be surprised if some of these horses didn’t go on to bigger and better things. For me, NO LOOKING BACK is the one to beat. She’s only raced once since her two year old days, a win in the Listed Carrington Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill a week and a half ago. I’ve been waiting to see her at 1400m and while this may be a tad too quick, I still think she’s the one to beat. Hopefully she’ll avenge her loss on protest in last year’s 2yo Classic! Earlier this week, I thought the value lay with CALIENTE, but the price has disappeared as more people have jumped on the bandwagon. Last start was a total forgive effort after not finding much room, this coming after a huge win first up. She’ll be the one storming late. SIZZLING may be the best horse in the race, but I’m concerned about the fact he’s going to get to an awkward spot from the draw. He’d have to be clearly superior to this field to win, and I’m not sure that he is. He can win, but happy to look elsewhere. Next best for mine is SALUTER, who ran well in the Vo Rogue. Next best Heza Jetsetter.

10 – NO LOOKING BACK
13 – CALIENTE
1 – SIZZLING
4 – SALUTER

Race 6 – MAGIC MILLIONS 2YO CLASSIC (1200m)

It was very disappointing to see the scratching of Assail this morning. The Clarry Conners-trained filly looked the one to beat in my eyes and I feel for connections – so close, yet so far! Hopefully it will be a blessing in disguise – maybe the Golden Slipper might be on the radar! That forces me to look elsewhere, and I find it difficult to overlook MISSY LONGSTOCKING. She’s the fairytale story of the field, bought for just $7500 at last year’s sale. She’s unbeaten, having won four races to date. At her first two, she blitzed her rivals before she won her last two at black type level – the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes (1000m) and the Group 3 Bruce McLachlan Stakes (1200m). She looks the consummate professional and she’s drawn well. Have to have her on top. CERTITUDE has drawn horribly, but her run behind Assail at Wyong was full of merit and if they run along in front, I can see her coming home over the top. She’s the value now. REAL SURREAL looked like she had something in hand when she won at Eagle Farm last Saturday. The back up is a concern but she should get a nice run and is a chance. And I think ARCHITECT, ridden by 65-year-old Tony Erhart for his wife Lorraine, may be the smokey. If he’d gone straight in the Bruce McLachlan, he almost would have beaten Missy Longstocking. Drawn to get the right run and should be in the mix. Next best is Greytfilly – but her chances will be known after the start, depending on how she jumps.

7 – MISSY LONGSTOCKING
12 – CERTITUDE
11 – REAL SURREAL
17 – ARCHITECT

Race 7 – MAGIC MILLIONS CUP (1400m)

5 – STEEL ZIP
2 – PHELAN READY
10 – STRATFORD
3 – STARTSMEUP

Race 8 – MAGIC MILLIONS CLASS 6 PLATE (1200m)

6 – I’M COOL
8 – WHISPEROSSA
12 – NEDIYM’S QUEST
3 – CARMINE KING

Best of  luck today!
