The first of Chuck Fipke’s stayers with Bart Cummings hits the trials

March 13, 2012

In 2010 I wrote about Chuck Fipke, a Canadian mining magnate and prominent owner who decided he wanted to win the Melbourne Cup after watching Efficient storm to victory in 2007.

The story came from a blog post written by Jack Werk about Chuck Fipke. I found the story intriguing, but also quite sad, for Jack passed away within two weeks of writing that story.

A renowned owner in America, with horses like Group 1 winner Tale of Ekati, Fipke has decided to follow a tried and true formula in his quest to win the race that stops the nation – buying progeny of super staying stallion Zabeel and placing them with twelve-time Melbourne Cup winning trainer Bart Cummings.

To read more my original story about Chuck Fipke, click here.

He bought three yearlings at the 2010 Karaka Premier Yearling Sale in New Zealand – all are now three year olds.

They are named Diamond Hunter (Zabeel x Love Diamonds), Octahedral (Zabeel x Markisa) and Mont Dane (Montjeu x Blowin’ in the Wind).

Diamond Hunter stepped out at the trials in late January and early February, finishing at the rear of the field on both occasions. A trial means nothing, however, and it will be interesting to see how he fares when he returns next preparation.

There is no word yet on the other two, but both are still listed in the care of Cummings so hopefully we may see them soon.
