Virgin Islands wins at Rotorua for Andrew Hawkins Racing

February 7, 2012

It’s been a hectic 10 days, so I haven’t had a chance to post this until now.

Virgin Islands, the Andrew Hawkins Racing filly, was a big winner at Rotorua on January 27.

We were worried about the three year old filly as she was facing a bog track (she’d always appeared to be better on top of the ground), a step back in trip (1670m to 1400m), in a small field (as we planned to go to the tail) and without the intended blinkers fitted (due to the heavy track).

But it didn’t bother her as she looped the field and came away to win by seven lengths.

She’s by O’Reilly out of the Mark of Esteem mare Virginia Key, so we hope that she will improve even more as she steps up in trip.

But it was a great feeling to see her streak home clear of her rivals.

Unfortunately, I had to listen to the race as the stream wouldn’t work in Ireland.

It was 3am when she raced, and I was trying ever so hard not to wake up my neighbours – when she crossed the line though, I doubt there would have been a soul awake in Limerick.

I was ecstatic.

The team at Baker Racing – Murray and Bjorn Baker and Andrew Forsman – have done a tremendous job with her so far and hopefully she can win a few more races!

Who knows, you might see her in bigger and better races in Australia later this year?

Here’s a replay of the win:
