Latin News is good news for Payne

November 24, 2011

A horse once considered as promising as dual Cox Plate winner So You Think looks a winning chance at Canterbury this weekend as he heads towards the “Summer Series” in Brisbane.

Latin News lines up in the Hylands Kids Colours for Christmas Welter (1100m) at his second start for Rosehill trainer David Payne.

At his debut for his new connections, he finished an unlucky short neck second to Ahdashim.

Jockey Nathan Berry fired in a protest but it was dismissed.

Formerly with master trainer Bart Cummings, Latin News made his debut within the same month as stablemate So You Think.

He had won his first two trials, including one where he defeated the son of High Chaparral comfortably.

On debut, Latin News recorded a four length victory, with many parallels drawn between the stablemates.

Together they were expected to spearhead a Cummings assault on the top three year old races, but while So You Think blossomed, leg issues plagued Latin News.

The son of Hussonet won the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) last year, while also recording a Group 1 placing in the BTC Cup (1200m) behind Albert The Fat.

However, he left Leilani Lodge after a fifth in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m) in May.

This weekend, he meets the likes of Galaxy winner Atomic Force, Canterbury Stakes winner News Alert, speedy commodity Keen Commander and up and comer Tiger Tees – but if he is anywhere near his peak form, he should go close.

He is $6.50 with IASbet.

After Saturday, races like the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) and the Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) will be on the agenda.
