Caulfield Cup losing relevance as Melbourne Cup lead up

October 11, 2011

I don’t think it is a stretch to say that this is one of the poorest Caulfield Cup fields assembled in many a year.

There are some highlights among the field, which will be officially confirmed later today, but in reality it is a sad indictment of the quality of Australian stayers.

23 horses accepted for the race this morning, including the unqualified Midnight Martini and import Rebel Soldier, who is yet to run better than 7th in his starts in Australia to date.

One of these horses is likely to be the fourth emergency.

However, what is notable is the fact the Caulfield Cup is losing its place as a key lead up to the Melbourne Cup.

Of the top 24 currently in the Melbourne Cup, only 8 horses – Mighty High, Absolutely, Manighar, Unusual Suspect, Drunken Sailor, Precedence, Lucas Cranach and Hawk Island – are likely runners in the Caulfield Cup.

This may be a reflection of Melbourne Cup placegetters over the last four years.

From the twelve placegetters, only two horses – Purple Moon (2007) and Viewed (2008) came through the Caulfield Cup.

Viewed also ran in the Mackinnon Stakes.

The Geelong Cup was used by Americain, Crime Scene and Bauer, the Lexus Stakes was the final run for Maluckyday and Shocking while the Cox Plate was the lead up for So You Think, Efficient and C’est La Guerre.

Mourilyan and Mahler did not run in Australia prior to their Melbourne Cup run.

This year, the likes of Lion Tamer, Shamrocker, Midas Touch and At First Sight will run in the Cox Plate, while Dunaden and Illo will go to Geelong.

The Moonee Valley Cup may also be fairly strong this year with Americain, Linton and Mourayan likely runners.

It could also be a year for a horse to win it without a prior run with Jukebox Jury, Red Cadeaux, Fox Hunt, Lost In The Moment and Modun set to run first up.

This weekend will be the first Caulfield Cup I’ll attend, it is just a shame it doesn’t look as strong as in previous years.

The final Caulfield Cup field will be released in about half an hour.

I thought the same thing regarding the strength of the field. With weights Raised they’re now compressed with 4.5kg covering ratings89-to ratings 112 horses.I like the topweight barrier 1 D Beadman

Good luck Darryn, definitely looks a year where those near the top of weights are not impacted like in previous years.
