Big weekend coming up for “15 horses to watch” followers

September 30, 2011

If you’ve been following the Andrew Hawkins Racing 15 horses to watch, I’m sure you’ll be as excited as I am about this weekend.

For you see, we are represented almost everywhere this weekend – I’m almost certain we’ll get our first Group 1 success too!

Let’s look at who’s running this weekend:

SEPOY – Friday, Moonee Valley, Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) – this is Sepoy’s first test against the older horses, and it is one where he is expected to win. Could deliver us our first Group 1 success tonight.

SATIN SHOES – Friday, Moonee Valley, Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) – back to her own age and sex, and at set weights, she is suited perfectly. Big chance.

BOOMING – Saturday, Hastings, Group 1 Spring Classic (2040m) – this will be his final test before the Caulfield Cup or the Geelong Cup. I don’t expect him to arrive on a winning note – I think Jimmy Choux will have his measure – but I’ll be watching with one eye on the future.

DO YOU THINK – Saturday, Randwick, Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) – back to Sydney suits, as I don’t think he goes too well the Melbourne direction. But back in distance is a major query and I can’t see him troubling the likes of Foxwedge and Masthead.

STRIKE THE STARS – Saturday, Randwick, Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) – who could have thought? My oddball selection, who I put in as my Gloaming/Spring Champion horse back at the start of August – is actually favourite in these races. He’s favourite in a Group 1! If anything, I’m probably the most confident about him this weekend.

FORETELLER – Saturday, Randwick, Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) – I’ve always had a big opinion of this fellow, and I hope he stands up tomorrow. He’s been well supported and I think he’ll appreciate the give in the track. Definite chance. No surprises that he’s my top pick.

HOUSTON BENEFACTOR – Saturday, Randwick, Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) – I haven’t lost faith with this girl! She sat three wide on the pace in the Tea Rose Stakes, you must forgive her that run. I hope she settles back a little bit today. I’m convinced she has a big win in her, hopefully it is this weekend.

LOST IN THE MOMENT – Saturday, Ascot, Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes (2400m) – my first runner outside of Australia and New Zealand. My top international all along, he has his final run in England tomorrow night. He enters quarantine straight after the run! Now, so I hear, he’s a confirmed visitor, which has me very happy. I think he’ll go very close in a big race on November 1.

DECEMBER DRAW – Sunday, Flemington, Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) – of all my fifteen horses, here’s the one I’ve actually taken a set against! I think he’s way under the odds now, despite him being my early Caulfield Cup selection. I wouldn’t mind if he was defeated in the Turnbull, especially against my next horse (as unlikely as it is).

EFFICIENT – Sunday, Flemington, Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) – it is so good to see the grey back! And boy, hasn’t he whitened considerably since we last saw him in 2009! His run was very much a rusty effort in the Underwood, and while I doubt all the cobwebs will have been swept away, I think he can run a race at cheeky odds. Flemington is his track.

Here’s hoping we can rack up our first Group 1 success this weekend!
