Today’s 3yo race at Sandown historically a stepping stone to stardom

September 14, 2011

All eyes will be on Race 2 at Sandown today with a number of nice horses going around.

Incredibly, this 0-68 over 1300m has been one of the best guides for three year olds heading into the spring in recent years.

A quick glance at the last five years of this race shows the following winners:

  • 2010 – BRAZILIAN PULSE – went on to win the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m), Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m), ran second in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m), ran third in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m)
  • 2009 – HANKS – went on to win the Group 2 AAMI Vase (2040m)
  • 2008 – not run
  • 2007 – WEEKEND HUSSLER – went on to win the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m)
  • 2006 – not run

Today’s race looks outstanding, and it wouldn’t be surprising if more than one of these runners measured up to black type races.

The standout looks Moment of Change ($1.60 with Centrebet), who won by ten lengths at Murtoa on debut in very slick time.

The only danger in my eyes is the Lloyd Williams owned Collar ($5.50).

By O’Reilly out of Caulfield Cup placegetter Laebeel, he was an impressive winner of the Elvstroem Classic at Swan Hill in June.

Others to watch are Vatican, Holdontoyahorses and Meethaq.
