Where have past Caulfield Cup/Cox Plate/Melbourne Cup winners resumed?

August 28, 2011

The spring preparations of many of our top gallopers are now underway.

I thought it would be interesting to look at where previous Australian and New Zealand winners of the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup kicked off their campaigns.

Since 1993, there have been 48 Australian and New Zealand winners of one of the big three – some of these are present multiple times, with Makybe Diva featuring four times and both Northerly and Might and Power featuring three times.

Of these, only 3 Caulfield Cup winners (Arctic Scent, Diatribe and Ethereal), 2 Cox Plate winners (Fields of Omagh and So You Think) and 2 Melbourne Cup winners (Ethereal and Viewed) started their preparation later than the Memsie Stakes meeting.

Of those, only Ethereal (September 15, 2001) and Fields of Omagh (September 23, 2003) started significantly later, with the others resuming the week after the Memsie Stakes.

10 winners (Fraar, Doriemus x 2, Makybe Diva x 3, Fields of Omagh, Efficient, Viewed, So You Think) started in the Memsie Stakes, while 4 horses (Jeune, Sky Heights, Mummify, Maldivian) started two weeks earlier in the Liston Stakes.

The Warwick Stakes was also a popular starting point, with 5 winners (Saintly x 2, Might and Power, Sunline, Descarado) using it to begin their preparations.

Significantly, 29 of the 48 winners resumed at 1400m, while 10 winners resumed over 1200m.

Northerly, who is counted three times, resumed in both 2001 and 2002 in the Goodwood Sprint over 1300m.

Two winners (Paris Lane and Dane Ripper) resumed at 1100m, two (Tawqeet and Master O’Reilly) resumed at 1600m, one (Savabeel) at 1000m and one (Brew) at 1700m.

Nevertheless, it is easy to say that the path will be much harder for horses like Descarado, Efficient and More Joyous – all of whom are not due to resume until after next weekend.
