If you could handpick the Melbourne Cup field today, which 24 would you choose to run?

July 17, 2011

In Japan every year, there are two races known as “All Star” races. These races see the majority of the field selected by popular vote from the public.

There is one every six months – the Takarazuka Kinen in June and the Arima Kinen in December.

I’ve always found the concept of this quite incredible.

So what would happen if the Melbourne Cup field was decided by popular vote?

Who would you vote for and why?

Racing fans are discussing that very question over at Thoroughbred Village.

We’ve done it at Thoroughbred Village every July for the last couple of years – each time, I’ve managed to get no more than eight horses who actually ran in the great race.

Who would you choose?

Head over to Thoroughbred Village now and give your thoughts on your ultimate 24 for the Melbourne Cup.

For the record, my top 24 would look something like this:

Americain
At First Sight
Base
Cedarberg
Efficient
December Draw
Gitano Hernando
Harris Tweed (GB)
Harris Tweed (NZ)
Lights of Heaven
Lion Tamer
Maluckyday
Mighty High
Namura Crescent
Older Than Time
Precedence
Rebel Soldier
Red Cadeaux
Sans Frontieres
Scarlett Lady
Shamrocker
Tactician
Whispering Gallery
Zipping

Perhaps, in the future, we might see a race like the Cox Plate, or even the Turnbull Stakes, become an All Star race with the majority of the field selected on popularity.

There’s some there that I would love to have in – Cape Blanco (would love to see him here, I always doubt O’Brien though until they are here), Scenic Shot, Rebel Raider, My Kingdom of Fife are probably the four I left out that I would love to have in.

I’d also probably have Descarado, but I don’t know, I would prefer to see Older Than Time step up for Gai than Descarado.

Great list though (and thanks for participating) – as I said before, we’ll have to catch up when I’m in Melbourne next! 🙂

The horses I pointed out are ones I don’t really see running but I’d love to see them in. I miss the good WFA horses coming out the Cox Plate running the Cup, last year we got that it created a lot of interest! I was all over the Cox Plate formline but alas it wasn’t to be.

No doubt mate, would be a fun day!
