The road to racing’s Holy Grail, the Melbourne Cup, begins

June 7, 2011

I must admit, I’ve been getting very excited seeing that some of Australia’s best stayers, like Precedence, Descarado and Shamrocker, are back in work.

All three will be aimed at the race that stops the nation, the $6m Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 1.

As I wrote in a uni assessment last year, the Melbourne Cup is an anachronism in an age where much of our breeding industry is focused on speed.

While most passionate racing fans believe the Cox Plate is our most exciting race – and it is true it is usually our best race – there is something about the Melbourne Cup that defies all logic.

It captures the imagination of a nation and there can be no doubt that it is the most watched three minutes of sport every year.

Perhaps it is the fact that the Melbourne Cup was my first taste of racing, not coming from a racing background; perhaps it is the fact that I gain a deep sense of satisfaction seeing the sport I love spoken about by my non-racing mates – whatever the reason, my year revolves around those three minutes at 3pm on the first Tuesday in November.

One of my early intentions for this blog was to follow the road to the Melbourne Cup, and so I will be making every intention to follow every snippet of news in regards to the great race.

Let the fun and games begin!
