Jimmy Choux to target Doncaster Mile

January 24, 2011

New Zealand’s best three year old male, Jimmy Choux, is on track to complete a rare double this autumn.

Trainer John Bary told New Zealand media outlets yesterday that despite stamina worries over his star, Jimmy Choux will run in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) on March 5.

However, Bary has confirmed to Just Horse Racing that a Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) start is a likelihood.

“Jimmy Choux will be aimed at the Doncaster if he gets through the [New Zealand] Derby safely,” Bary said.

The Thorn Park colt has stamped himself as New Zealand’s best three year old male after dominant wins in the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m), the Group 2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m), the Group 2 Great Northern Guineas (1600m) and the Group 3 Wellington Stakes (1600m).

He has built an imposing record with seven wins and five minor placings from 14 starts.

A tough, genuine horse, his only failure came when he suffered cardiac arrythmia in the Group 1 Levin Classic (1600m), won by boom filly We Can Say It Now.

Jimmy Choux is currently a $4 equal favourite for the New Zealand Derby with NZ TAB and a $35 chance for the Doncaster Mile with TAB Sportsbet.
